Washington, D.C. – The Nation’s Capital

Washington, D.C., did not exist when the United States declared itself a nation at the start of the Revolutionary War with Great Britain The government first met in New York City and later Philadelphia.

Cities competed to become the new nation’s capital. Congress gave then President Washington the power to choose the site. He selected the land along the Potomac River not far from his own estate. Maryland ceded the land to the federal government for the creation of this new federal district.

The city was designed by Pierre-Charles L’Enfant. The French born architect and engineer had served in the American Revolutionary Army. He became friends with George Washington, who hired him to design the new city. The city today is mostly true to what L’Enfant originally intended.

Today, in addition to being the country’s seat of government, it is a city of historical importance. About 15 million people visit Washington, D.C., each year. Visitor spending in the city exceeds $5.2 billion.

    2. The relative benefits of a consolidation loan may vary over time and will depend on individual circumstances. The longer the property and loan at a new lower rate and term is kept, the more interest savings can be realized when compared to your current situation. The repayment period of a mortgage loan can generally be shortened when additional funds above scheduled monthly mortgage payments are consistently paid and applied to reduce the loan balance.
