Virginia - Historic and Modern

In 2007, Virginia celebrated the 400th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown Colony. It was the first permanent English colony in the "New World" Virginia was one of the 13 colonies in the American Revolution. It also was part of the Confederacy in the Civil War.

Virginia boasts the second oldest college in America, the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. The University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson. Founded in 1619, its General Assembly is the oldest legislature in the Western Hemisphere.
