South Dakota – The Mount Rushmore State

The Black Hills of South Dakota are the backdrop for two wonders of artistry and commitment – the granite sculpture of four U.S. Presidents at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and the memorial to Crazy Horse, a Native American warrior.

It took sculptor Gutzon Borglum and scores of workers 14-years to carve the heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln from the granite to create Mount Rushmore.

The 60-foot faces of these figures literally tower over the landscape below. At its start in 1927, the artist originally designed a much grander project. A lack of funding cut those plans short.

Not far away is the Crazy Horse Memorial. Native American Chief Henry Standing Bear asked sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve a mountain sculpture honoring American Indians. Work began on this mammoth carving on Thunderhead Mountain in 1948 and Ziolkowski’s family continues working on it today.

These monuments, as well as South Dakota’s natural beauty have made tourism the second largest industry in the state. Agriculture, a traditional mainstay of South Dakota’s economy, continues to be its largest industry.

    1. Refinancing or taking out a home equity loan or line of credit may increase the total number of monthly payments and/or the total amount paid when compared to your current situation.

    2. Affects pricing. With the No Closing Cost Refi Option, borrowers finance the closing costs instead of paying for them at closing. Borrowers who pay closing costs at closing may qualify for a lower interest rate. Some upfront fees (ex. credit report and appraisal) may apply and may be credited at closing. Call for details.
