Oklahoma - The Sooner State

It was the land runs in 1889 and the early 1890s that led to the Oklahoma's nickname as the Sooner State. There were five land runs in Oklahoma. The runs were held for homesteaders on a first-come basis. A time and date were set for the run to begin. Settlers, who crossed into the area before the allowed time, were entering "sooner" Eventually it became the state's nickname.

In the 1830s, the area of Oklahoma had been set aside as Indian Territory. And many tribes of Native Americans were relocated to the area. The legacy is that today, Oklahoma has the largest American Indian population of any state, many descended from the original tribes. There are no reservations in the state, but 39 tribal nations have headquarters in Oklahoma.

African-Americans have also played an important part in the state's history. They were cowboys, settlers and farmers. In the Indian Wars in the late 1800s, the Native Americans gave them the name "Buffalo Soldiers" African-Americans created more all-black towns in Oklahoma than in the rest of the states combined. Although many of these black towns disappeared over time, they are still remembered annually in Juneteenth celebrations.

Information gathered from the State of Oklahoma Web site and links from its site.

    1. Refinancing or taking out a home equity loan or line of credit may increase the total number of monthly payments and/or the total amount paid when compared to your current situation.

    2. The relative benefits of a consolidation loan may vary over time and will depend on individual circumstances. The longer the property and loan at a new lower rate and term is kept, the more interest savings can be realized when compared to your current situation. The repayment period of a mortgage loan can generally be shortened when additional funds above scheduled monthly mortgage payments are consistently paid and applied to reduce the loan balance.
