New Mexico Quick Facts
New Mexico - The Land of Enchantment
The first permanent European settlement in New Mexico was along the Rio Grande in 1598. It was 50 years after the early Spanish explorers had been through the area searching for the lost cities of gold.
The area of New Mexico had been claimed by Spain. When Mexico won its independence in 1821, New Mexico became a province. This led to the creation of the Santa Fe Trail, a trade and commercial link between the U.S. and the West.
The area became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War in 1848. The territory of New Mexico was created in 1850. It was not admitted as a state until 1912.
Today, visitors marvel at the state's natural wonders. It is an outdoor playground with mountains and deserts, skiing and fishing, golfing and hiking, boating and off-roading. New Mexico is filled with 40 state parks, three national parks and 10 national monuments.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park with its beautiful underworld of caves is probably the best known natural wonder in the state. Other attractions include: ruins of ancient civilizations, such as the Aztec Ruins National Monument, the atomic legacy at the site of the first atomic bomb detonation, and modern wonders like the Very Large Array of 27 giant radio antennas.
