Montana Quick Facts
Montana – Big Sky Country
Montana was not explored until the early 1800s when the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through on their way to the Pacific Ocean. Trappers and explorers visited the area, and the first settlement may have been set up by missionaries.
It was the discovery of gold and copper in that 1850s that finally attracted people and led to the creation of the Montana Territory in 1864. Montana became the 41st state in 1889.
Early settlers were miners and cattle and sheep ranchers. In the early 1900s, changes to the Homestead Act brought thousands of new farmers to the state.
Today, Montana’s economy is still mainly based on agriculture, ranching and mining or other use of natural resources. In the last quarter century, tourism has played an increasingly important role. It is now the state’s second largest industry.
Visitors are drawn to Montana for its natural beauty and sites of historical importance. Three of Yellowstone National Park’s five entrances are in Montana, as is Glacier National Park, Lewis and Clark Caverns and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Sites of major battles in the Indian Wars also attract visitors, including Little Bighorn National Monument and Big Hole National Battlefield.

1. The relative benefits of a consolidation loan may vary over time and will depend on individual circumstances. The longer the property and loan at a new lower rate and term is kept, the more interest savings can be realized when compared to your current situation. The repayment period of a mortgage loan can generally be shortened when additional funds above scheduled monthly mortgage payments are consistently paid and applied to reduce the loan balance.
2. Refinancing or taking out a home equity loan or line of credit may increase the total number of monthly payments and/or the total amount paid when compared to your current situation.
