Mississippi - The Magnolia State

The Mississippi Territory became the 20th state in the U.S. in December 1817. The rich Mississippi Delta region is an area filled with history. Once the location of elegant plantation estates, the Delta also is home to some of the most unspoiled marshland in the country.

Located along the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi's Gulf Coast offers miles of beautiful sandy beaches, which are a major tourist attraction. The coastal area also is home to the state's casino resort areas.

Traditionally a rural state, cotton was the king of Mississippi's agriculture economy for more than 100 years. Today, agriculture is still vital to the state's economy and cotton is still an important crop. Others are soybeans and rice.

The state produces about 60 percent of the country's farm-raised catfish. It is considered a world leader in pond-raised catfish. Other important industries include minerals, petroleum, natural gas, plastics, wood products and chemicals.

One of the state's biggest claims to fame is as the birthplace of "The King,” Elvis Presley in Tupelo, Miss. Today, visitors can tour the two-room house where he was born and the adjacent Presley Museum.
