Louisiana Quick Facts
Louisiana – Named for a King
The first French explorers into the area that is now Louisiana claimed the territory for their country and named it La Louisiana. Meaning “Land of Louis,” it was named for King Louis XIV. The original Louisiana Territory once included a vast swath of North America up to today’s Canadian border. The U.S. purchased the territory from Napoleon Bonaparte in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The state’s long, colorful past has created a state with a rich diversity of people. They are descended from Native Americans and the settlers from many European countries as well. This mix of cultures led to the creation of unique foods and music.
Eating in Louisiana is a delight for the senses with elements from the French, Cajuns, African-Americans, Germans and Creoles. One example is gumbo, the official state cuisine.
The other draw is the music. Jazz was born in New Orleans. Visitors can sample New Orleans style jazz in the French Quarter at Preservation Hall. The field hands in the south are credited with creating the “blues.” Louisiana singers and musicians were among the first to record the blues. This uniquely American form contributed to the development of jazz, gospel, country and rock music.
