Arizona - A Desert in Bloom

Arizona was the 48th state to join the union in 1912. A sparsely populated desert territory then, today Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the country. The boom really began after World War II with the advent of air conditioning.

It may be hard to imagine, but Arizona was once the largest cotton producer in the country. Copper mining was also vital to the state's economy. Even today about two thirds of the copper output in the nation comes from Arizona.

The Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, is located in northern Arizona. Carved by the Colorado River, the beautiful, steep sided canyon draws visitors from around the world. Other popular tourist areas are Sedona, Prescott, Tucson and Tombstone.

Arizona is has one of the largest known meteorite-impact sites. Visitors to the Barringer Meteorite Crater can view the crater, which is mile wide and more than 500 feet deep.

The state government is the largest employer in Arizona. Other high employment industries are the high-tech sector, electronics components manufacturing, aerospace manufacturing and, of course, tourism.
