3 Tips to Help You Get Better Gas Mileage
With gas prices riding a rollercoaster that seems to trend upward, many consumers today are looking for ways to improve their auto’s fuel efficiency. Hybrids are gaining in popularity, but still make up only a very small portion of vehicles in the U.S. But, even the everyday family car can get better gas mileage by following a few tips.
Tip #1: Check the air pressure in your tires.
Fuel economy can improve up to 3% if tires are inflated to the recommended pressure.
Tip#2: Avoid ‘jack-rabbit’ starts and hard breaking.
Frequent acceleration and fast stops as well as aggressive driving can reduce gas mileage by as much as 30% on the highway.
Tip#3: Reduce speed while driving.
Driving 65 miles per hour (mph) rather than 75 can improve mileage on some cars by up to 5 miles a gallon. Fuel economy can get even better at 55 mph. Using cruise control, when possible, contributes to better fuel economy.
